Executive Director
Viviana Knowles

Viviana graduated with degrees in Business Administration and Financial Economics from Methodist College in North Carolina, and, since her initial experiences as an international student in Germany and the United States, she developed an immeasurable passion for the process of integration of immigrants into their new worlds. She also has experience in business development, government relations, management, team building and fundraising. During 2006-7, she led Immigrant Students in Action’s initiatives to provide higher education opportunities for immigrant youths in Rhode Island. She has also acted as Treasurer for the Alliance for Hispanic Health, and has been a member of the Rhode Island Professional Latino Association and the Rhode Island Civil Rights Round Table. Viviana has lived the mission of English for Action. As an immigrant herself, she continues to work for community-based empowerment that makes a difference in the lives of Latino immigrant families and communities. “With the help of all members of the community and organizations in Rhode Island, I hope to continue opening opportunities for all and to allow spaces for immigrants to fully participate in the American dream”.

Education Director
Alicia Pantoja

Alicia has been in love (!!) with EFA since she became an ESOL facilitator in 2003. After a short absence to swim in the world of Bilingual Education in NYC, she's back at EFA to continue being part of the superb work EFA does in Providence! EFA has changed her life radically, and she is extremely thrilled to be working so closely with learners, facilitators, staff, families, and community organizations to continue empowering our Olneyville. She encourages everyone visiting this website to become involved, no matter how far or close you are to our office and our neighborhood, and to smile at people when walking down the street.

That same year, she learned about English for Action by taking part in a program called Voz Mujer, which changed her life drastically. It was during her participation in which she discovered the importance of teaching language literacy. In 2006, EFA’s Native Literacy Language program was created and Rosario played, and continues to play, a huge role as the lead coordinator. During her spare time, Rosario likes to play softball, dance regional Mexican music (She teaches folklore dance), watch ballet, opera, theatre, ice skate, listen to classical music or just watch a good old baseball game. One of Rosario’s goals is to start a children’s theatre someday.

English For Action supports and utilizes both of these tools. Ben is involved in order to contribute effectively to the betterment of the community and society. EFA Founder
Adriana Valdez Young

Adriana started teaching ESOL classes to immigrants in the Olneyville Neighborhood as an undergraduate at Brown University. But rather than just teach English, Adriana dreamed of integrating language learning with important community themes. With the vision to create a holistic, participatory ESOL program, Adriana, along with her friend, Spring Miller founded English for Action (EFA) in 1999. For two years, Adriana facilitated creative adult ESOL classes for fifteen learners in church basements, public schools and living rooms. After graduating in 2001, Adriana collaborated with ten dedicated immigrant families to incorporate EFA into a non-profit organization. From the spring of 2001 to to summer of 2004, Adriana led EFA from a small program with a $350 budget to a growing organization with a $200,000 budget that now serves 150 immigrant families every year.

Adriana stepped down from the executive director position in June 2004.
