English for Action’s mission is to create participatory educational programs for Latino immigrant families and community members in Providence that link language learning, leadership development and community-building. Using innovative and creative tools such as the arts, theatre and community action projects, English for Action (EFA) creates critical and transformative learning communities within and outside of the classroom. Through the process of dialogue, reflection, and collaboration, EFA seeks to affect meaningful and community-based social change in Olneyville and the greater Providence community.
Overview of Position:
The Development and Performance Assessment Coordinator (DPAC) main goal is to improve English For Action’s (EFA) organizational capacity to measure program performance, as well as sustainably fund innovations. Ideally, this is a 2 to 3 year position. In the first year, the DPAC will focus on making use of existing program data already being collected by English For Action and use it to identify gaps and weaknesses that will guide programmatic improvements and strengthened fundraising efforts. The second and third years will build upon the foundation year to include key performance indicators for programs and an efficient information collection system and tie this to enhanced fundraising efforts. As years 2 and 3 progress, the job responsibilities will evolve to support organizational performance and sustainability.
1) Support development of mixed methods performance measurement practices
- Catalogue current quantitative and qualitative data already being collected for RI Department of Education funding and routine program evaluations
- Organize data into usable format for future reference
- Analyze data by class and program
- Present results to staff and board, and facilitate discussion to use results to identify strengths and weaknesses and formulate near-term solutions with existing resources
- Identify larger program gaps requiring additional resources
- Identify additional data needs and questions to characterize gaps
2) Help staff to integrate these practices, and resulting recommendations, into their routine program planning work
- Coordinate with staff to implement near-term solutions documented in initial performance review
- Support Education Director to lead monthly meetings with staff to provide updates and troubleshoot problems with implementation of program improvements
- Provide support as needed to individual staff members to interpret and implement performance review decisions
- Coordinate with staff to facilitate review of routine data at end of each semester and provide support as needed to individual staff members to interpret data in between performance reviews to gauge progress
3) Identify and apply to funding sources for programmatic improvements that directly address gaps identified through performance measurement
- Based on gaps identified in program performance review that cannot be addressed with existing resources, conduct search through internet, networking, and institutions such as the Rhode Island Foundation to identify funding sources to implement program improvements
- Work with Executive Director and Board to decide which opportunities to pursue
- Coordinate proposal development process with input and support from Executive Submit at least 3 proposals
4) Upgrade financial development system to provide staff with a tool to sustainably incorporate ongoing performance measurement findings into program implementation.
- Document funding sources’, their requirements, and usual application deadlines that may berelevant to EFA this year and in coming years
- Organize database of past EFA donors, including identifying past donors with interests pertinent to each new proposed program improvement
- Develop fundraising plan comprising multiple channels for fundraising to achieve targeted program improvements
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Bilingual English/Spanish (speaking and writing) preferred
- Demonstrate commitment to working with immigrant communities and in grassroots social justice organizations
- Grounded in relationships with individuals and organizations in communities of color
- Independent and self-motivated, also able to work in teams
- Skilled with social media and website management
- Familiarity with office and productivity applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Apps
- Flexible work hours – available some evenings and weekends
Desirable Skills and Qualifications :
- Grant-writing skills and experience
- Experience in managing records and finances
- Experience working with the Latino immigrant community
- Some experience working with ESOL programs preferred
- Knowledge of Providence and the surrounding core urban areas
- Familiarity with Quickbooks
